Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Tuesday emphasized that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) embodies the spirit of the Constitution, aiming to establish harmony and equality for all citizens.

Speaking to ANI, Sanghavi stated, “UCC is that feeling of the Constitution that will establish harmony and equality. To ensure equal rights for all citizens of Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel has formed a committee to draft the UCC law.”

He further explained that the committee, chaired by former Supreme Court justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, will submit its report to the state government within the next 45 days.

This announcement follows the Gujarat government’s formation of a 5-member committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, to prepare a draft for the Uniform Civil Code. The committee’s report will guide the government’s next steps in the creation of the law. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel confirmed this during a press conference, stating, “The committee will submit its report in 45 days, after which the government will make its decision.”

Patel also highlighted the importance of the Indian Constitution in ensuring citizens’ duties and rights, noting, “Under the leadership of Modi Ji, we are celebrating 75 years of the Constitution. His vision is to implement the Common Civil Code nationwide, so that everyone receives equal rights.”

In his remarks, Patel referenced key steps taken by the government, such as the revocation of Article 370 and the ban on Triple Talaq, saying, “Promises regarding the abrogation of Article 370, One Nation, One Election, and the banning of Triple Talaq are being fulfilled.” He affirmed that Gujarat is actively working to align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of providing equal rights and opportunities for all.

Earlier this month, Uttarakhand became the first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code.
